Good afternoon members,
I thought I would write a short spiel to help demystify what Aero Club competitions are all about, as well as educate myself as I have never been involved in them either.
From the outside I know they seem a bit scary, lots of people all gathered at a small aerodrome watching your every move, as they see if you can land precisely on the magic spot in hopes of glory and shiny trophies but there is also the social side. Where like-minded aviation enthusiasts come together to catch up with old friends and make new ones over coffee or something a bit stronger.
The competitions on offer at these events vary greatly; We have spot landings, aerobatics, formation flying, low flying, navigation exercises even competitions on who does the best pre-flight and streamer cutting. For the social ones on the ground generally the day will be filled with BBQs, drinks, flying displays and chat about all things aviation. There is something in it for everyone!
Here at WAC we are sometimes a little restricted in practicing some of the flying involved in the competitions but this a great reason for us to get out there to some new aerodromes and have a go. Remember you can book a plane and an instructor to do this anytime or we have a club trip coming up to NZMS on the Sept 25th.
The next RNZAC Competition will be held at Paraparaumu 4th-5th November in conjunction with the Kapiti Aero Club. It's an Ideal location for us meaning you can drive up or fly up for the day. I have attached some links below containing information about the upcoming regionals and even a link to the competition rulebook for the brave.
